What is in the pack

The rapid test checks a fresh stool sample for Giardia antigen. It can be used with stool from dogs, cats and other animals. It gives you a first indication at home, which you then discuss with your vet practice.

In the pack: 2 test cassettes, 2 cotton swabs for taking the sample, 2 sample tubes, 1 bottle of buffer solution for both tests, 1 pair of gloves and detailed instructions.

The test is a screening, not a diagnosis. Have a positive result checked at your vet practice. A negative result does not rule out Giardia, because shedding varies from day to day. That is why you do the second test on a different day.

How reliable is the Giardia rapid test?

How do I do the test?

Take a little material from three spots of a fresh stool sample with the swab, mix it in the tube with the buffer solution and put 3 drops on the test cassette. After 10 minutes you read the result.

Does the test work for cats too?

Yes. The test is meant for stool samples from dogs, cats and other animals, and it works the same way.

What do I do with the result?

If it is positive, call your vet, who will examine the stool. A negative result does not rule Giardia out: do the second test on another day. If your pet still has diarrhoea, go to the vet.

The test does not run. What can I do?

Usually there is too much sample material in the test field. As the instructions say, carefully prick the test field with a needle so the liquid can flow, and use less material for the second test.

How to do the test

You need a fresh stool sample. You read the result after 10 minutes.

  1. Step 1

    Take a sample

    Use the cotton swab to take a little material from three spots of the fresh stool sample. Less is better than too much.

  2. Step 2

    Mix and drop

    Mix the swab in the tube with the buffer solution. Put 3 drops on the test cassette and lay it flat.

  3. Step 3

    Read

    Read the result on the test cassette after 10 minutes.

How to read the result

Positive
Two lines appear (C and T), even if the T line is faint. Giardia antigen was found in the sample. Have the result checked at your vet practice. At home, clean bowls, beds and floors at the same time.
Negative
Only the control line C appears. This does not rule out Giardia, because shedding varies from day to day. Do the second test on another day. If your pet still has diarrhoea, see your vet practice.
