Understanding Giardia

What are Giardia?

Giardia are single-celled intestinal parasites that can cause diarrhoea in dogs and cats. They leave the body with the faeces and can end up in the home: on floors, bowls, blankets and carriers. Only a vet can tell whether your pet really has Giardia, by testing a stool sample. ViPiBaX is not a medicine and does not treat your pet. We take care of hygiene in your pet's surroundings, alongside the treatment from your vet.

How can I tell if my dog has Giardia?

Possible signs are recurring or mushy diarrhoea, sometimes with mucus, plus weight loss or a dull coat despite a normal appetite. These signs also fit many other causes. So if you suspect Giardia, go to your vet, where the stool is examined. Do not guess and do not treat on your own. A rapid test for home use can give you a first indication. Your vet makes the call on what your pet has.

Is Giardia different in cats and dogs?

The signs are similar: diarrhoea, weight loss, a generally poorer condition. Cats sometimes show symptoms less clearly, especially when they otherwise seem well. The check works the same way, with a stool test at the vet practice. At home, the same applies as for dogs: bowls, sleeping places, the litter box and carriers belong in your cleaning routine, because your cat touches them every day.

Can people catch Giardia from their pet?

Giardia also occur in humans. Whether and how easily they can pass from an animal to a person in a given case is for doctors to judge, not us. If you are worried or have symptoms yourself, talk to your GP. In any case, it makes sense to wash your hands after every contact with faeces and to keep a fixed cleaning routine on the surfaces your pet uses every day.

Is Giardia more serious for puppies?

Young and very old animals are generally considered more sensitive, because ongoing diarrhoea takes more out of them. That is one reason not to wait with a puppy, but to see your vet early. Only your vet decides how serious the case is and what to do. Your job at home is the surroundings.

How long does Giardia treatment take?

It varies from animal to animal and depends on the findings and the treatment plan. Only your vet can tell you. For your home: the cleaning routine runs alongside the treatment. It does not end on the first better day, but when your vet gives the all-clear.

Why does Giardia keep coming back in some animals?

Repeat findings can have several causes, and a vet should look into them. One point that is often overlooked is the home: if bowls, blankets, floors and carriers are left out of the routine, the household is left out too. That is where ViPiBaX comes in. The medical side stays with your vet.

Can my other pets catch it?

In a home with several pets, the animals share bowls, sleeping places, floors and often the carrier. Your vet decides whether you should separate them or have all of them tested. For the home: add every surface the animals share to your cleaning routine.

Do home remedies help with Giardia?

There is a lot online about home remedies, from carrot soup to coconut oil. We do not rate them and we do not recommend them. A Giardia finding belongs with your vet, and your vet decides what your pet gets. What is in your hands is the home: a fixed cleaning routine on the surfaces your pet touches every day.

My dog has Giardia. What do I do first?

First: book an appointment with your vet, so the finding is confirmed and treatment is set. Second: pick up faeces right away and completely, indoors and outdoors. Third: put the home on a fixed routine, that is bowls, sleeping places, floors, blankets and the carrier. Step one is medical and not our job. For step three, the ViPiBaX products help you.

Cleaning at home

Which surfaces should I clean first?

Start where your pet has daily contact: food and water bowls, sleeping place and blankets, the floors in its favourite spot, the carrier and, for cats, the litter box. These surfaces get the most contact, so a routine there makes the biggest difference. The rest of the home comes after. Each product's instructions tell you how to use it.

Which surfaces is the Hygiene Spray for?

The Hygiene Spray is for wipeable surfaces around your pet, for example bowls, beds, cat trees and carriers. Take care with textiles, bare metals and delicate wood, because active chlorine can attack them. Test delicate materials on a hidden spot first. The label tells you which surfaces are suitable and what the contact time is. You can see all sprays under Hygiene Spray.

Can I use the spray on fabrics?

Dog beds, blankets and mats get a lot of contact, but they are also the most delicate. Active chlorine can bleach fabric. Test on a hidden spot first to see whether the material can take it. For anything washable: if it can go in the machine, wash it as hot as the care label allows. The label has the exact directions for use.

How do I wash blankets and the dog bed?

Follow the care label and wash as hot as the material allows. Wash your pet's things separately, not with the household laundry. Anything that does not fit in the machine, such as a large dog bed or a basket, you treat as a wipeable surface, following the directions for use. Take covers off and wash them too, where possible.

How often should I repeat the routine?

For as long as your pet is being treated: every day, in the same order, so you do not miss a surface. You can stop when your vet gives the all-clear, not on the first good day. Hygiene in your pet's surroundings runs alongside the treatment, not instead of it.

Do I need to wipe after spraying?

With the Hygiene Spray, wait for the contact time as stated on the label, then wipe with a clean cloth or let the surface dry. Rinse bowls with clear water before the next use. With the Floor Concentrate, there is no need to wipe again: walk on the floors once they are dry. Each product's label has the exact directions.

What about the garden or balcony?

Outdoors, the most important thing is to pick up faeces right away and completely, on every walk. Hard surfaces such as a patio, balcony or paving stones can be added to the routine. You cannot treat lawn and soil across the whole area. There, picking up every time is what counts. If you are unsure how to handle outdoor areas, ask your vet.

Is my usual all-purpose cleaner not enough?

An all-purpose cleaner is a cleaning product, not a biocidal product. These are different categories with different requirements and labelling. The ViPiBaX Giardien EX Hygiene Spray is notified as a biocidal product to the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA), notification number N-113462. A notification is not an approval. The label tells you how to use it. You need both: clean first, then apply the hygiene product.

What comes first, cleaning or disinfecting?

Clean first: remove visible dirt and any faeces, then apply the hygiene product as directed. No product works sensibly on a dirty surface. For the first clean, use disposable cloths or something you can wash hot afterwards, and put faeces in the general waste in a sealed bag.

What about the car and the carrier?

The carrier is one of the most overlooked surfaces, even though your pet sits in it in a tight space. It belongs in the same routine as the bowl and the sleeping place. For the car boot: wash removable mats and blankets, treat wipeable surfaces as directed and test delicate materials on a hidden spot first.

Products and use

Which product is right for me?

For bowls, beds and the carrier, the ready-to-use Hygiene Spray in the 500 ml spray bottle is the one: no mixing, no measuring. For floors, use the Floor Concentrate: add it to your mop water, 100 ml to 5 l as stated on the label. If you already have a spray bottle, the 2.5 l refill pack is enough. Need both? The sets combine the spray and the floor concentrate. For vet practices, shelters, breeders and boarding kennels there is the Professional Line.

What is the difference between the spray and the floor concentrate?

The spray is ready to use and meant for single items such as the bowl, sleeping place and carrier. The floor concentrate goes into your mop water, for larger areas such as floors. Both are biocidal products with the same active substance, active chlorine released from sodium hypochlorite. They differ in concentration: 1.2 g per kg in the spray, 5.6 g per kg in the floor concentrate. Each label has the exact details.

Is the refill pack worth it?

Yes, as soon as you clean for more than a few days. In the 2.5 l refill pack, a litre costs about a third of the price in the 500 ml spray bottle, and it fills the bottle five times. Refill only the original spray bottle, so the label stays with the product. No bottle yet? The Hygiene Spray Duo contains the spray and the refill pack. Every product page shows the price per litre.

How much do I need?

It depends on how many surfaces you treat regularly and how long the routine runs. For a home with one pet, the 500 ml spray bottle is the usual start. If you have several pets, larger floors or a longer routine, the refill pack or the floor concentrate costs you less. As stated on the label, 1 l of floor concentrate makes 50 l of mop water. Compare the price per litre.

What is the Giardia rapid test, and what can it not do?

The rapid test is a screening test for home use. It can give you a first indication, but it does not replace an examination by your vet. A negative result does not rule out Giardia, because shedding varies from day to day. The pack contains two tests, so you can do the second one on another day. Any result, either way, belongs with your vet, where the stool is examined properly. Do not decide on any treatment based on a home test.

Is ViPiBaX a medicine?

No. ViPiBaX Giardien EX is a biocidal product for hygiene in your pet's surroundings, not a medicine. It is used on surfaces, not on the animal, and it does not treat any illness. Only your vet prescribes treatment for your pet. As a biocidal product, the Hygiene Spray is notified to the BAuA, notification number N-113462.

Does the product smell strongly?

The formula contains no alcohol and no perfume. The active substance is active chlorine, released from sodium hypochlorite. It has its own smell, and no fragrance covers it. So air the room during and after use. The label has the full details on ingredients and use.

Where can I buy ViPiBaX?

Right here in our shop. Also in pharmacies. The manufacturer of the household products is ViPiBaX GmbH in Langenhagen near Hanover, Germany. So we answer your questions ourselves, by phone or by email. For vet practices, shelters, breeders and boarding kennels there is also the Professional Line with larger containers and volume pricing.

How do I store the product?

In the tightly closed original container and out of reach of children and animals. The binding details on storage, shelf life and disposal are on the label and in the safety data sheet of each product. Do not transfer the product to other containers.

Is there something for vet practices, shelters or breeders?

Yes, the Professional Line for vet practices, shelters, breeders and boarding kennels. It contains more active chlorine than the household products, for example 40 g per kg in the floor concentrate instead of 5.6 g. The floor concentrate comes in 2.5 l and 5 l, the spray in 500 ml with a matching refill pack. Volume pricing is available on request. Each label shows how to use the product and its hazard labelling.

Treatment and limits

Does ViPiBaX treat my pet?

No. ViPiBaX is hygiene for your pet's surroundings and does not replace veterinary treatment. The product is used on surfaces, not on the animal. If you suspect Giardia, go to your vet, who examines your pet and decides what it needs. Our part sits next to that, in your home.

What about Panacur, fenbendazole or metronidazole?

These are medicines, and only your vet decides on medicines for your pet. We give no recommendation, no dosage and no assessment. We are not allowed to, and we do not want to. ViPiBaX is not a medicine and does not compete with them. It covers the other half: the surroundings.

Why do I need hygiene if my pet is already on medication?

Because the treatment is for your pet, not for your home. Bowls, sleeping places, floors and carriers are not part of it. That is where hygiene in the surroundings comes in, alongside the treatment and not instead of it. Talk to your vet about how long to keep up the routine.

Does the rapid test replace a visit to the vet?

No. The rapid test is a screening test for home use. It gives an indication, not a medical finding. Examining the stool and interpreting the result belong at the vet practice. Even with a negative result: if your pet shows symptoms, have it examined.

My pet still has symptoms despite treatment. What now?

Then go back to your vet, and soon. We cannot and may not assess this. What you can keep up in the meantime is the cleaning routine at home, for as long as your vet recommends it.

Is hygiene on its own enough?

No. Hygiene in the surroundings does not replace veterinary treatment and was never meant to. If your pet shows symptoms or there is a finding, the way forward is your vet. Hygiene at home is the part you take on yourself, next to the treatment.

When can I stop the routine?

When your vet gives the all-clear. Not on the first day without symptoms, and not when the pack is empty. This decision belongs with your vet, because that is where the findings are.

What do I tell my vet about ViPiBaX?

That you are running a cleaning routine at home alongside the treatment, with a biocidal product for the surroundings: the ViPiBaX Giardien EX Hygiene Spray, BAuA notification number N-113462, active substance active chlorine released from sodium hypochlorite. All details are on the label and on the product page, where you can also download the safety data sheet.

Is ViPiBaX suitable for all kinds of pets?

ViPiBaX is not used on the animal but on surfaces around it. The label states which areas of use each product is labelled for. If you are unsure whether a particular use makes sense for your animals, ask your vet.

Where can I find the full product information?

On the product label and on each product page. There you find the active substance, directions for use, contact time, hazard information and the BAuA notification number. You can download the safety data sheet there too. Read the label and product information before every use.

What do you need for your home?

Choose by the surfaces you need to clean. Bowls and beds work with the spray. For floors, you also need the floor concentrate.
