Does the rapid test replace the vet?

No. The test is a home screening. It detects Giardia antigens in a stool sample and gives you a first indication after 10 minutes. The diagnosis is made by your vet, who examines the stool and decides on the treatment. Take the test result to your appointment, and do not decide on a treatment based on a home test.

How reliable is the Giardia rapid test?

The rapid test is a home screening, not a diagnosis. It can miss Giardia, because shedding varies from day to day. That is why there are two tests in the pack, and your vet checks every result with a faecal examination.

How do I do the test?

Take a little material from three spots of a fresh stool sample with the swab, mix it in the tube with the buffer solution and put 3 drops on the test cassette. After 10 minutes you read the result.

Does the test work for cats too?

Yes. The test is meant for stool samples from dogs, cats and other animals, and it works the same way.

What do I do with the result?

If it is positive, call your vet, who will examine the stool. A negative result does not rule Giardia out: do the second test on another day. If your pet still has diarrhoea, go to the vet.

Screening for home use

Giardia rapid test for home use

The test detects Giardia antigens in a stool sample. The pack contains everything for two tests. As the instructions say, you read the result after 10 minutes.

The test is a screening, not a diagnosis. A negative result does not rule Giardia out, because shedding varies from day to day. If the result is positive, if diarrhoea continues or if you are unsure, go to your vet. The diagnosis is made there.
